BLEACHED PICKS OF THE WEEK: Clairo, Nelly Furtado & Tove Lo & SG Lewis, Charlie Puth, Jeremy Zucker + Lauv + Alexander23, BLOKBSTR

Clairo – Sexy To Someone

It’s been three years in-between albums for Clairo, but the New York based indie-pop artist is returning with her third studio album “Charm” on July 12. Alongside the exciting announcement, she’s dropped the first taste of new music with the sultry “Sexy To Someone”. The confident track hears her returning strong with an intimacy at the heart of the lyricism soaked in lush production. Opening with the bold statement “sexy to someone is all I really want” she details the different levels of confidence and motivation it would give her to get out of the house and complete things. It’s an immediately catchy track with its smooth refrain getting stuck in your head. A great return for Clairo, and a return that will get you really excited for what is to come.

Nelly Furtado, Tove Lo & SG Lewis – Love Bites

We are in a brand new era for Nelly Furtado, and she’s making sure she’s got your attention firmly on her. “Love Bites” is the Canadian pop-icon’s official return following her coveted collaboration “Eat Your Man” with Dom Dolla last year. Teaming up with Tove Lo and SG Lewis, she’s delivered a dance-floor anthem that will immediately have you ready to dance in a sweaty club. It’s a big EDM-pop belter that feels really current, but also has a nod to early 2000’s at its core. “I want your body all mine. Boy, you’re looking too fine. The way your love bites” she sings during the alluring hook. The collaboration between these three artists feels very smart. It works so naturally, and has this dominating energy that will overtake your whole body from the moment the refrain echoes in the intro.

Charlie Puth – Hero

“We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” Taylor Swift sings on the title track of her new album “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT”.And while Puth is a global hitmaker, I do understand the sentiment she wanted to make because he really should be bigger and more acclaimed for the hits he has under his belt. And now all eyes are on him as he releases his newest single “Hero”, which is taken from his upcoming fourth studio album. At its core it’s a big pop song, but he’s stripped it back to give you a production that is led by an acoustic guitar and soothing harmonies. It builds up atmospherically, and the earworm hook creeps in and gets stuck in your head with such ease. The romantic track is about falling love and wanting to be there for someone through all the hardships as well as the good times. “She cut me off and that’s when she said, I don’t need a hero, I don’t want to be saved. But I said, I’ll be here every night and day” he sings. Another hit for Charlie Puth.

Jeremy Zucker, Lauv & Alexander 23 – Cozy

Following the success of boygenius, there’s another alt-pop supergroup trio that want to come into your life. Jeremy Zucker, Lauv, and Alexander 23 have joined forces and affectionately nicknamed themselves “The Girls”. Their first single together is the warm “Cozy” which feels like a continuation of Jeremy and Alexander’s collaborative track “Nothing’s The Same”. The romantic track is all about falling for someone who makes you feel so warm and safe when you’re around them. “But when you kiss me, it’s so cozy. And I don’t know what it is, it’s like you know me. And there’s a thousand reasons why we should stop and say goodnight. But I don’t care ’cause you’re so damn cozy” they sing during the comforting hook. The soft production led by light acoustic guitar and atmospheric pop production reassures that feeling and immediately draws you into a summer afternoon aesthetic.

BLOKBSTR – Apartment

Sydney based electronic-pop trio BLOKBSTR have exploded onto the scene with their stupidly infectious debut single that brings a little bit of playfulness to your heavy rotation playlists. “Apartment” fuses together influences from Art Vs Science and Confidence Man for a chaotic three and a half minute duration of silliness which will have you immediately falling in love. There’s a polished element to the production which is then met with a gritty interference that brings a punk-attitude to their artistry. You will find yourself screaming along to the hook “my house, is an apartment” straight away. This is a very strong debut single that stamps an individuality on their project with a sense of nostalgia embedded at its core.
