BLEACHED PICKS OF THE WEEK: Ashton Irwin, Tove Lo & Sg Lewis, Tayla Parx & Tkay Maidza, Nina Nesbitt, Toby Hobart & HANNI

Ashton Irwin – Lose You

After surprising everyone with the announcement of his sophomore studio album “BLOOD ON THE DRUMS” last week, Ashton Irwin has shared the first half of the record in it’s shiny pop-rock glory. “Lose You” is one of the stand out moments from Part 1 with its pulsating production that is a little reminiscent of the “CALM” and “Youngblood” eras of 5SOS. It captivates with its infectious earworm hook that immediately pulls you in, and will immediately just make you smile and feel good. It’s all about recognising when you find “the one”, and knowing that you’ll never find something that feels as perfect as this does. “Cause I know that if I lose you, I’d lose the best thing I’ve ever had. If I lose you, I know I might not make it back” he sings. Along with “I See The Angels”, you are going to have this song on continuous repeat and be begging for Ashton to take this album on the road so you can experience it live.

Tove Lo & Sg Lewis – Busy Girl

Following the release of her fifth studio album “Dirt Femme” and its stellar accompanying tour, Tove Lo has been M.I.A as she rests and cooks away. But she’s returned today to deliver a little treat in the form of a scrumptious earworm filled collaborative EP with Sg Lewis. “HEAT” is a little four-track collection that feels very welcomed in the BRAT world we are currently living in. “Busy Girl” to me is THE moment on the EP. It’s a cunty electronic-pop track that feels like pinnacle Tove but through a different electronic lens. It’s the hyper-pop club remix of what you’d expect from her in the best way possible. I never want to turn this song off, and I want ever club to just have it ready to play as soon as I walk in so I can have the refrain “I push, I work, I’m such a busy girl. I’m lush, I’m first. I get what I deserve” soundtracking my life.

Tayla Parx feat. Tkay Maidza – Era

After slow-dripping the singles “Flowers”, “Rich”, “For What It’s Worth”, “Dream Hotel”, “Something In My Eye” and “Celebration Weight” over the past 2 years, the multi-GRAMMY nominated Tayla Parx has finally announced her forthcoming third studio album “Many Moons, Many Suns” will be released July 12. Along with the announcement, she has also dropped a new anthem for you obsess about and make your entire personality. “Era” featuring Zimbabwean-born Australian rapper Tkay Maidza is one of those songs that after the very first listen you’ll find yourself adding it to every playlist you have. It’s a playful and upbeat track about personal evolution that captures a confidence we all need to embrace in our lives. “I’m in my uh-uh era. I’m in my fuck it era. I’m in my mm-hmm, I already had that era. My one-two step, Ciara. Booked and busy era. I’m in my mm-hmm, uh-huh, in my best me era” she sings. Tkay comes in for the second verse and gives her stamp of personality, and the two together have this kinetic energy that is so uplifting and commanding.

Nina Nesbitt – I’m Coming Home

Nina Nesbitt’s forthcoming third studio album “Mountain Music” will be finally in the world on September 27, but to keep us fed in the mean-time the Scottish singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has dropped a Springsteen inspired anthem. “I’m Coming Home” feels like a pivotal moment for her that brings together this new sonical world with her already captivating live show. It’s going to be one of those songs that becomes THE special moment in the set where everyone screams a little extra loud together. It’s all about embracing your roots, and hears her reflecting on her Scottish upbringing. “I’m drivin’ down these old dirt roads. I see the hills up on the right. White grass, artificial ski slope” she sings during the opening verse. It begins with a guitar led production and her warm vocals before building up to this impactful chorus that is brash and uplifting. There’s a little bit of Noah Kahn and Maisie Peters influences that also shine through the production and structure.

Toby Hobart feat. HANNI – Pretty Please

It certainly feels like the week of stellar collaborations, and a homegrown standout comes in hot from Australian rising newcomers Toby Hobart and HANNI. “Pretty Please” is a playful pulsating-pop track that hears both artists diving into a soundscape that lets go of their usual vulnerable nature, and showcases a carefree experimental side that is so fun to listen to. Sonically found somewhere between Shawn Mendes and KHALID, they have you bouncing along immediately to the earworm hook. Encapsulating the classic feelings of wanting someone you know isn’t good for you, that play into it with an energy that is so infectious. “They say you’re a pretty little problem, so pretty come here” Toby sings during the chorus. And let’s not begin with how perfectly their two vocals blend together – they sound SO good. It just begs the question – can we pretty please have another collaboration from Toby Hobart and HANNI?
