Kelly Clarkson is exploring the vast emotions connected to chemistry between two people on her appropriately titled tenth studio album “chemistry”, out June 23. So far the Grammy winning artist has given us heartbreak on “mine”, self-love on “me”, lust on “favorite kind of high”, and now she’s getting angry on the poignant “i hate love”.
This song is literally every thought my bitter heart has about love. I hate it, but I love it at the same time, and somehow I always find myself falling back in love and getting fascinated with the things it makes you do. “I hate love, it’s a cruel reminder. Even when I know it’s bad for me, these memories fill my mind. Why do you smell so good? You know I love that cologne.” she sings during the first verse.
The infectious laden pop track feels like it’s from the “Stronger” era and is intertwined with a banjo which is played by Steve Martin (yes, THAT Steve Martin), who she also references in the second verse. Iconic really. “I hate love, and “The Notebook” lied. ”It’s complicated” is more like what happens. So you can keep Gosling and I’ll take Steve Martin.” she hilariously sings, and it’s honestly so relatable. The refrain is so catchy, and you’ll find yourself immediately humming “i hate love, I hate love, I hate love” after you finish listening, and let out a little giggle.
“chemistry” is shaping up to be one of the most honest and exciting records of the year because it’s a full-rounded human experience; the good, the bad and the ugly of a relationship. There’s no where to hide, and we just need to embrace how we feel in the moment, and that’s what she done with each track she’s releasing.
