SINGLE REVIEW: Nicki Minaj + Ice Spice (with AQUA) – Barbie World

The Barbie movie soundtrack is the gift that keeps on giving because the singles they keep delivering are pure fire. One of the biggest controversies surrounding the movie was the early-on announcement that AQUA’s “Barbie Girl” would not be featured in the film or soundtrack. The outrage was real, and they found a way to get around the legalities by sampling the song in a new track by two of the world’s biggest rappers; Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.

“Barbie World” is going to be a track that divides people because it’s simply just Nicki and Ice  rapping over the original sample with new production. But after a few listens you will actually realise that they are bringing a new perspective to the track, and the new production elements are what your hyper-pop dreams are made of.

Sitting at just under 2 minutes long, the brief track packs a dynamic punch. The thumping bass that comes in when Nicki raps “Yellin’ out, we ain’t sellin’ out. We got money, but we ain’t lendin’ out” and when Ice raps “She a Barbie bitch with her Barbie clique. I keep draggin’ her, so she bald a bit” is A MOMENT, and you immediately know it will go off in a club. They reimagine the hook and give you some classic new lines like; “I’m a doll, but I still wanna party. Pink ‘Vette like I’m ready to bend. I’m a ten, so I pull in a Ken. Like Jazzie, Stacie, Nicki. All of the Barbies is pretty. All of the Barbies is bad. It girls and we ain’t playin’ tag”.

The Barbie movie soundtrack is out July 21, but the singles keep rolling out with Charli XCX next on the agenda on June 30.
