SINGLE REVIEW: Salty – Why Don’t We

Rising Sydney based pop artist Salty is making sure she’s on your “must watch lists” for 2023. Following the release of recent singles “measured in heartbeats”, “Exaggerator” and “Lucy” over the past two years, she’s entering 2023 with a bold confidence that can be heard so purely in her first single of the year.

“Why Don’t We” is simply Salty’s best release yet, and it hints at the dark-pop exploration that is to come within her music. Reminiscent of FLETCHER and Sabrina Carpenter, this song immediately brings the listener into a dark-pop realm while also intertwining a hopeful escapism that pulsates through the chorus. The production by Cyrus Vill is bold, exciting, and has heaps of layers to it which has you immediately hooked.

Reflecting on all the dark and anxiety driven thoughts that cloud her mind, Salty takes an interesting direction with imagining a positive spin and how that might help her get through it. Co-written with Charley and Cyrus Vill, she questions if we are all going to die then why doesn’t she just live in the moment and do the things that scare her. “If we’re going to die, why don’t we kiss somebody till we’re naked. Stay till 3am, get wasted” she sings while living in her YOLO era.

“Why Don’t We” feels like a real glass shattering moment for Salty. It really cements the artist she wants to be, and gives listeners an honest look into her mind, while also delivering an earworm hook that will get stuck in your head.
