At this rate we are getting one new Gwen Stefani song a year, but if “True Babe” is the only song we get in 2023 (hopefully it’s not), then I will be pretty content with the romantic banger we’ve received. Following the release of the ska infused “Let Me Reintroduce Myself”, the hip-hop inspired “Slow Clap”, and the Sean Paul reggae collab “Light My Fire”, this track feels more aligned in her pop-centric releases. Reminiscent of tracks like “Truth”, “Make Me Like You”, “Rare”, “4 In The Morning”, and “Cool”, she is gushingly sharing her love with listeners.
Lyrically it’s one of her more honest tracks of recent acclaim and details her infatuated love for husband Blake Shelton. It’s essentially a love letter to him about spending life with him and continuously making new memories together. “I wanna fly to your shows. Wanna wake up in your clothes. Come get you tipsy at 6:30. Wanna take tonight slow” she sings before proclaiming “Cause it’s true, babe, true, babe. I’m sleeping better next to you, babe, you, babe” in the catchy hook.
The guitar led production allows her signature vocals to shine through with a playful flair before changing tempo for the chorus and showcasing her more theatrical delivery. It’s classic Gwen Stefani, and it’s the best material we’ve heard from her since her third studio album “This Is What The Truth Feels Like” in 2016.
