It’s been ten years since Bonnie Mckee was meant to release “SLAY”. The song got shelved, along with the album “Hot City” following the release of “American Girl”, and for the last decade she thought no one wanted to hear it and that it didn’t deserve to see the light of day. But recently she got inspired to finally let it out into the world, so in 2023 we are finally getting that record.
“SLAY” is the first taste of the highly anticipated album, and has been a fan favourite since she performed it on tour in the US in 2013. Whilst she’s given the production a bit of a retouch, the song is still heavily cemented in the 2010’s pop sound. After all, Bonnie is responsible for some of the biggest hits from Katy Perry, Kesha, Adam Lambert, Taio Cruz, Britney Spears, Rita Ora and more from that era. So basically she invented that sound and that lyricism. She immediately transports us back to that time with a carefree and euphoric synth-pop production that simultaneously feels nostalgic and fresh.
The empowering pop song is all about escapism. It’s also about celebrating and uplifting each other which feels like something we need in our lives more than ever right now. Not to mention it’s also the perfect pride anthem. “Come on everybody, let’s go. We can do anything. It don’t matter what people think. We’ll keep slayin’ like 1999” she sings during the euphoric hook.
“SLAY” is a big slay.
