The most anticipated movie of the year, Barbie, is quickly approaching us with its July 20 release date in Australia. Alongside the movie will be the star-studded soundtrack which has been delivering an impressive roll out of bangers, but it was about time Barbie made us emotional.
Billie Eilish has taken on that responsibility and delivered us one final single before the full album release. “What Was I Made For” is an existential track that questions our purpose in the world. Written specifically referencing the journey Barbie goes on in the real world, there is also a very universal element of feeling lost, confused, and unsure of the path ahead that I think we all go through at one point or another. “Cause I, I, I don’t know how to feel, but I wanna try. I don’t know how to feel, but someday I might” Billie poignantly sings.
The production is deeply rooted in the classic Billie Eilish sonic. With light piano keys, sweeping orchestral strings, and angelic melodies immediately capturing the listeners attention, this song is cemented in a dreamy yet moody space. The soundscape is reflective and haunting, and will have you feeling emotional, which is its obvious intention.
Billie and FINNEAS have approached this soundtrack song very differently to “No Time To Die”, and its breathtakingly beautiful.
