If you’re a pop music fan then you’re probably already obsessed with Renee Rapp. The American singer-songwriter famously played Regina George on Broadway in Mean Girls: The Musical 2019-2020, and has now transitioned to a full-time pop star. Her debut album “Snow Angel” is out August 18, and following the title track last month she has dropped a new single that cements exactly why this record will be a must-listen.
“Talk Too Much” is a relatable alt-pop anthem about hyperfixating and constantly feeling like you’re too much for others. It’s a feeling I know well, and adopted as a full personality trait a long time ago. She’s turned these feelings into a punchy and emotionally fuelled track that reflects her thought process, and in-turn celebrates who she is. “I’m takin’ everything I see as a sign and I know it’s crazy but what if it’s right?” she questions. Reflecting on meeting someone and starting to date them, she acknowledges that she’s her worst enemy in getting in the way and creating an expiry date. I’m here again, talkin’ myself out of my own happiness. I’ll make it up ’til I quit. I wonder if we should just sit here in silence” she honestly sings.
Produced by Alexander 23, “Talk Too Much” is a powerful evolution of Renee Rapp’s pop music progression, and is heavily influenced by A23’s previous production work. It begins moody and light with a simple guitar riff and drum beat while he smooth lyrics trickle over the top. Then as the chorus ignites she layers vocals and adds heavier drums and guitars that deliver this angst that represents the annoyance at herself. It builds so gradually and perfectly, and is then stripped down by a spoken monologue that represents a manic conversation that inspired the track. And then she launches back into one final chorus which is full electric and powerful.
“Talk Too Much” is Renee Rapp’s best track yet. And if this song is anything to go by then the album is going to be one emotional, relatable, and empowering body of work.
