Every now and then a song just immediately stops you in your tracks. It might the lyrics, the production, or the unique vocal delivery that intrigues you, but either way it finds a way into your head and your heart in a matter of seconds. Stella Gray’s infectious new single “Bottom Of Jack” is one of those moments. After initially teasing the song a few months ago on TikTok, the New York based Australian singer, songwriter and producer has finally released it in its full glory. And if you’re like me, you will be hyperfixating over it immediately.
Inspired by Fred Again.., Labrinth, and Flume, she teamed up with Cyrus to bring this punchy and unforgettable production that slips in an earworm hook that won’t leave your mind. Opening with the vocoder refrain “bottom of jack, barely in tact, risking my health, get a bit back” she immediately sets the tone. Dark pop synths fill the verses as she gradually builds to this moody drop that delivers a punch to the gut and will simultaneously have you dancing. It feels like a song that would be blasting during a night time driving scene in a coming of age Netflix film, or could fit into a party scene in an episode of Euphoria.
Exploring the familiar feeling of disassociation, this track is all about losing yourself to the final resort, which in Stella’s case is a bottle of Jack Daniels. It’s the spiral that can keep going, or if you’re self-aware, it’s the moment where you claim yourself back.
“Bottom Of Jack” is an absolute standout moment for Stella Gray as she begins introducing herself to the world.
