Orla Gartland’s debut album “Woman On The Internet” was one of the standout records of 2021, and rightfully so. The impressive body of work was ultimately vulnerable, a little quirky, and delivered a big alt-pop punch. Ever since the release we’ve been waiting patiently for the next chapter to begin. In-between that time her song “Why Am I Like This” was featured in season 1 of Netflix’s “Heartstopper” and welcomed a whole new legion of fans. And now she’s ready to usher in a new era, and she’s done it in the biggest way possible with it being premiered on BBC Radio 1, and it also being featured on episode 3 of Heartbreaker season 2.
“Kiss Your Face Forever” welcomes Orla back with a grunge-pop sonic that will have you head-banging and screaming along immediately. With it taking elements of “Zombie”, and “Codependency” from her debut album, she creates this sound that is filled with angst and confidence but also still has a vulnerability at its core. The earworm hook will immediately get stuck in your head and you’ll find yourself singing the line “I wanna kiss your face forever” over and over again. There’s a confident energy that shines through so bright, and will have you ready to bounce around in the pitt during her live show.
Orla’s lyrics have always been super vivid, strong and honest, and this song delivers one of my favourite moments from her to-date. “Let’s play a game of emotional Monopoly in the name of monogamy” is a line that truly gagged me, and it’s one that will live rent-free in my mind for a long time to come. This song is all about the two emotions that can take over whilst you’re falling in love, with one being super excited and energised, and the other being cynical and withheld. And as someone who is simultaneously a hopeless romantic but also been hurt too many times, I relate a bit too much to that sentiment.
While you’re waiting for more new Orla Gartland music to come, you can listen to her as the lead singer of the new supergroup Fizz, which is a collaborative project with Dodie, Gretta Isaac and Martin Luke Brown. Their debut album “The Secret To Life” is out September 15.
