LIVE REVIEW: G FLIP – Enmore Theatre

G Flip is a born entertainer. For 90 minutes, their “DRUMMER Australian Tour” at the Enmore Theatre was a pure masterclass in performance and musicianship. From firstly creating a safe space where everyone could be authentically themselves and find an escapism from their day-to-day life, to delivering a show that was visually and sonically captivating, everything about this tour felt special.

The mostly sold-out run of dates marks G’s biggest headline tour yet, and also cements them as a live act you have to witness. This tour elevated everything about their live show they’ve been building over the past couple of years. The production and lighting rig was bigger. Their band was bigger. The stage was bigger. And the songs are naturally bigger. Their sophomore album is full of anthemic singalong’s and cinematic influenced production that translated so naturally to the live stage with fans already knowing every lyric, even though the album has only been out for less than a month. And even though the venues were significantly bigger compared to their last run of shows, they still managed to create an atmosphere that felt intimate and like they were connecting with every single person in the room.

The setlist had a really strong energy that gradually built and had so many unique peaks throughout that created these incredible standout moments. From the opening drum solo from G that led into “7 Days”, to standing on top of the piano during “Be Your Man”, the group drum solo in “Rough”, the synchronised group singalong during “Australia”, to multiple points where they jumped into the crowd, there were consistently these individual highs that had the audience entranced. G even helped a young fan come out as gay during the show, and gave some merch to a fan who was singing along to every lyric throughout the night.

From the big singalong moments of “Hyperfine”, “About You”, “Killing My Time”, “Drink Too Much” and “The Worst Person Alive”, there were also vulnerable moments like “You + I”, “Morning” and “Lover” that showed off their vocals and songwriting.

The “DRUMMER Australian Tour” was a must see live show for 2023. Everything about it was electric. And while their live show has always been particularly strong, this one just felt even bigger than before.
