LIVE REVIEW: Becky Hill – Liberty Hall

Becky Hill turned a sold out show at Liberty Hall into the hottest club night over the weekend in Sydney. The English singer-songwriter’s first Australian tour was a sold out affair, with the excited crowd singing every word of every song right back to her for the full hour show. The packed venue was brimming with excitement and sweat as everyone tried to find a spot and danced to the anthemic tracks that soundtracked the moments leading up to the show.

With the lights dimming, Becky Hill finally strutted her way to centre stage for opening track “Crazy What Love Can Do”, accompanied by two backing vocalists. “Sydney, how the fuck are you?” she exclaimed. “Thank you for not only spending your Saturday night with us, but also for selling out my first ever headline Sydney show”. The crowd immediately showed her they weren’t messing around by screaming every lyric loudly of “Gecko (Overdrive)”, and “Last Time”, which instantly made her aware this was going to be an unforgettable show. Welcoming a string section, and brass section on stage, she explained how she opted to bring some musicians she worked with from the Heritage Orchestra on the Pete Tong tour. The string and brass sections brought a unique energy to the show instead of her having a typical band set-up. Going into tracks like “Piece Of Me”, “Back And Forth”, “Hold On”, Afterglow” and “Disconnect”, it felt like a greatest hits show because every song was a bonafide banger.

Taking moments in the show to chat with the crowd, she noted; “you will get to know me quick. I love talking shit, and I can’t stop”, and she’s honestly so real for that. As she was introducing the Meduza global mega hit “Lose Control” she explained that people don’t realise it’s her singing on the track, and whenever she plays it live she can vividly see people freaking out and putting it all together. She also pointed out before her new single “Never Be Alone” that she was actually wearing the same dress that night as she is in the music video. “My Heart Goes (La Di La)”, and covers of “Heaven”, “You Got The Love” and “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” kept the energy trajectory high, before she revealed that her final two songs would be “Wish You Well” and “Remember”, and that was truly when the night peaked.

Becky Hill delivered a masterclass in drum and bass and edm-pop with faultless vocals that soared, and a unique musician set-up which added to the special nature of the show. The crowd were rowdy and transformed the venue into a nightclub while they sweated and spilt drinks on each other singing and dancing along to a setlist of anthems only. It may have taken her 10 years to get to Australia, but it’s safe to say with a reaction like that she will be back again very soon.
