Ariana Grande has truly served pop brilliance on her seventh studio album “Eternal Sunshine”. From start to finish this record takes you on a journey of heartbreak, self discovery, and pure joy. She takes control of the narrative and shares her side of the story while reminding you that behind all the tabloid stories is a real person who has real emotions. Sonically inspired by the 90’s, this record feels like a moment in time for the global artist, and with every listen it grows more intensely on you. Here are my top 5 songs from the record;
1. we can’t be friends (wait for your love)
If there is only one song you listen to from this record then it’s this one! (you really should listen to them all though). But this is THE moment from the record. It’s a vulnerable, stunning, and catchy pop track that is an immediate Ariana classic. Along with the “me and my truth we sit in silence” line and “You got me misunderstood, but at least I look this good“, there are truly some unforgettable moments within the song that will keep you going back for more.
2. bye
When Ariana goes on tour next, this HAS to be the opening song. It’s a theatrical pop song that is reminiscent of “Be Alright” with its campy production and stellar hook.
3. i wish i hated you
This is an album that navigates a breakdown of a relationship, and this song perfectly summarises some of those emotions as you prepare to move on. “I wish I hated you. I wish that weren’t true. Wish there was worse to you. I wish you were worse to me” she sings as she tries to find her peace.
4. eternal sunshine
This is another track that directly references the breakdown of a relationship and for this song she takes inspiration from the film “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”. She imagines if she could just forget the relationship ever happened and just move on so she didn’t have to deal with the pain.
5. the boy is mine
The album is sonically heavily inspired buy the 90’s, and this track is one of the most obvious nods. It feels like a big 90’s pop-RNB track that you want to sing into a hairbrush. It’s truly brilliant.
