There’s no better feeling than a hometown show. The energy in the venue is always electric, and the audience knows the ins and outs of the songs and their vivid locations better than anyone else. And Middle Kids’ return to Sydney was a specifically special one with a sold out show at Enmore Theatre for the closing weekend of their “Faith Crisis Pt1” album. With Mia Wray on support duties, the crowd filled out quickly as everyone held down their prime vantage points to dance and sing the night away.
Opening with “Petition” and the anthemic “Dramamine”, Middle Kids immediately had the crowd singing along as they prepared for a setlist that covered most of the new record as well as all of the fan favourites and hits. “It’s so good to see you, what the heck” lead vocalist Hannah Joy exclaimed as she looked out to the sold-out crowd. Early old favourites in the set included “Your Love”, “R U 4 Me?”, “Mistake”, “Salt Eyes” and “Bad Neighbours” before they steered back into the new album. They didn’t mess around with long banter in-between songs and just focused on delivering a high-octane show that felt especially euphoric. The stripped back “All In My head” was a clear standout in the set with its raw emotion breaking the show up beautifully, before “Highlands” brought the festival vibes with its infectious hook.
As the band reached “Edge Of Town” they were ready to turn it up a notch with confetti filling the air as the famous bridge ignited. With the crowd getting anxious that the crescendo moment meant the set was ending Hannah quickly told the crowd they still had 5 songs to go and they kept that high-energy going. Rounding out the set with “Bootleg Firecracker”, “Stacking Chairs”, “Cellophane (Brain)”, “Never Start” and “Bend”, they thanked the crowd for spending their Friday night with them.
Middle Kids have always known how to put a show on and this tour perfected their craft in a 75 minute punchy set that left you wanting so much more, and will have you undoubtedly back again in the future.
