LIVE REVIEW: Conan Gray – ICC Sydney Theatre

Conan Gray is a star, and as he kicks off his “Found Heaven On Tour” world tour in Australia he’s proving to everyone that he’s the prince of pop with a show that mesmerised for its entire 90 minute duration. Playing to a sold out crowd of 9000+ strong at the ICC Sydney Theatre, he took fans on a journey through his three album discography with a big focus on his newest release “Found Heaven” which ushers him into arena territory sonically and theatrically.

With the sounds of thunder and lighting rumbling, the curtain draping the stage dropped to reveal Conan standing on top of a staircase striking a pose for opening track “Fainted Love”, before going straight into the big singalong’s “Never Ending Song” and “Wish You Were Sober”. The staging was elaborate and to a full pop show scale with risers, strobe lighting, and shredded curtains draping around the stage. As “Eye Of The Night” began the shredded curtains dropped to reveal a giant led star that lit up and added this very theatrical element that related back to the branding of the album and era.

Excitedly addressing the crowd he welcomed them to the “Found Love On Tour” and introduced his band and himself. He played big scream-along tracks like “People Watching” and “Jigsaw”, as well as the vulnerable and tearjerking “Family Line” and “The Story”. The show felt very high energy but held onto a sincerity that lacked in his previous Australian tour. There was a growth in his showmanship, while the structure of the setlist was well balanced and highlighted each era well.

After closing out the initial set with “Lonely Dancers”, “Heather” and “Memories”, Conan returned for an encore with a new shirt that read “Boygeniuses”. Rising up on an elevating platform for “Bourgeoisies” he had a massive jacket around him. Coming back down from the platform he closed out the set with “Maniac” and “Alley Rose” which saw him showered in confetti and lasers. A perfect end to a very theatrical and impressive live pop show that cements Conan Gray as the next arena popstar.
