Sunday evening gigs are always a test for my soul, because they sound like a great idea until you actually get to the day and you remember instead you could be in bed watching tv before the start of a new week. And sometimes that is true, but other times it’s worth it as you witness something truly special, and Tiny Habits sold out show at Factory Theatre in Sydney was one of those moments.
With the lights dimming Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is A Place On A Earth” blasted through the venue, which felt like an odd mood setter for the specific show that was about to occur, but at the same time it was also sort of perfect. The Boston three-piece made up of Judah, Maya and Cinya walked out to a very excited crowd for opening songs “Circling”, “People Always Change” and “delay”. They were in Australia at the beginning of the year to support Gracie Abrams and for that run it was just them three with Cinya playing acoustic guitar the entire set, and they impressed with their flawless harmonies which felt like the centrepiece of their set. For this run of headline shows they have a full live band with them which elevated that performance to new heights, but also managed to not take away from the pure magic of their harmonies and vocal delivery.
“Hi Sydney, what’s going on?” Maya exclaimed to the cheering crowd before diving into a set that saw them performing the entirety of their debut album (except “Small Enough”). “Mudroom”, “Flicker”, and “The Knocker” were early favourites that received big singalongs, and a cheeky cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” was goosebump inducing. The set was divided by some strong segments, and one of those was when they each performed their “solo” songs from the record (“Broken”, “Malleable”, and “Planting Flowers”) before then breaking everyone’s hearts with “Wishes” which is undoubtedly one of my favourite songs of the year, and sounded like a lot of people’s favourite song too. Another standout section of the show was when the band departed the stage and just the three of them performed “some things (i’ve learnt)”, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”, and their newest single “For Sale Sign” which they brought out opening act Sidney for. Bringing the band back on stage they closed out the show with “hemenway”, “I Don’t Have The Heart” and “tiny things”, which wrapped the show with a nice little bow.
Tiny Habits delivered what may have been the most wholesome show of 2024. It was a show that was all about the music and the art of songwriting, and for the full 90 minutes you were captivated and in awe of their raw talent. It’s a show that doesn’t need all of the bells and whistles, and instead it’s organic and food for your soul. They are a band I feel blessed that I have gotten to see twice so early on, and I will continue to come see them as they ultimately get bigger and more people fall in love with the warmth they radiate through their live show and music.
Tiny Habits perform in Melbourne on Tuesday 3 December at The Croxton Bandroom. Final tickets available HERE.
