LIVE REVIEW: Spacey Jane – Hordern Pavilion

With three sold out nights at Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, it feels like there’s no one quite like Spacey Jane in Australian music right now. The Western Australian four-piece are well and truly on their way to sold out arena territory with a polished live show that feels as electric and sweaty as their early gigs.

Following last months release of their third studio album “If That Makes Sense” they’ve kicked off their world tour in New Zealand and Australia with shows that feel like a true homecoming. With years of headline shows and acclaimed festival slots under their belt, this show is undoubtedly their best yet and proves why they are one of Australia’s biggest touring exports.

Walking out onto the stage for opening song “Through My Teeth” and “Estimated Delivery” from the new album the ecstatic crowd are immediately singing along to every word. “Sydney, how ya fucking going?” lead singer Caleb Harper exclaims. “It’s been a while since we’ve played a proper show, and it feels so nice to be back for the first of three shows in Sydney” he adds before rolling into fan favourites “One Bad Day”, “Skin” and “Lunchtime”. New single “Whateverrrr” feels like it has the biggest evolution into the live set from the new album, while “Ily The Most” has a surprisingly huge reaction from the crowd. “Wanna hear a Spacey Jane classic” Caleb asks before playing “Feeding The Family”, and they kept on coming with “Thrills”, “It’s Been A Long Day”, “Head Cold” and “Good For You” following. “Booster Seat” rounded the set out before they returned for an encore of my personal favourite from the new album, “So Much Taller”, and another Spacey Jane classic “Lots Of Nothing”.

It was a seamless show full of radiating energy that saw Spacey Jane at their absolute best. It felt like every member of the band had a moment to shine, and whether it was guitarist Ashton Cornu running around and doing kicks in the air, drummer Kieran Lama’s big smile, bassist Peppa Lane’s infectious energy, or Caleb’s cheeky nature that makes them all so loveable.
