LIVE REVIEW: Medium Build – Lansdowne Hotel

The Lansdowne Hotel is such an intimate venue in Sydney, and every now and then you get to witness a really special show there where you think to yourself, “I am never going to see this artist play a venue like this again”. And now Medium Build is one of those acts following his recent headline show there. This is his second time in Australia in 2025, following supporting Role Model in February, and now he’s back in the country supporting Alex Warren on his sold out run.

This last minute sold out headline show was a stripped back solo affair that just saw Nick (aka Medium Build), a guitar, and a bunch of candid stories take to the stage for a mesmerising 90 minute set. “Fuck, we are doing this again” he proclaimed as he took to the stage. Half of the show felt like a stand up comedy set with his well-timed stories taking you on a sporadic journey of highs and lows, and every now and then he would drop a vulnerable truth bomb that continued to draw you closer and closer to him. From talking about shopping in the CBD earlier in the day, “sometimes you buy a jacket because the boy is cute and you feel bad”, to admitting the last time he was in Sydney triggered a mental breakdown he had in Adelaide and brought him to his current sober journey. There were no filters, and it was honesty at its purest form.

Opening with “Friend For Life”, he played a set that weaved its way through his big discography and touching on a lot of fan favourites like “Triple Marathon”, “In My Room”, “Drug Dealer”, “Crying Over U”, and “White Male Privilege”. Throughout the show he played three new songs, including “Last Time” which he revealed was the next single he was putting out. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen you have a decent time” he sings during the emotionally reflective track about having an intimate moment with an ex where you wonder if that is going to be the last time. But the clear standout of the night was a fan request, “John & Lydia”, which is about his relationship with his parents from his 2024 EP “Marietta”. Pure goosebumps moment, where the entire audience was silent in absolute awe.

As my friend and I left the show, we were raving to each other about how that was the best gig we had seen in a long time, and we truly meant it. It was 90 minutes of honesty, artistry and pure musicianship. It was a moment where if you weren’t in attendance, then I really am sorry for you.

Stay tuned for a BLEACHED: The Podcast episode with Medium Build dropping on Tuesday 2 September.
