Hopping off an international flight after 24 hours of travelling and going straight to a concert is something I never planned on doing, but in the case of being my only chance to see Audrey Hobert live I did it. And I can confirm it was an escapism that put my jet lag on hold and allowed me to be transported to Audrey’s pop world for 50 minutes and be absolutely captivated by her star power.
On her second night at Sydney’s legendary Enmore Theatre for The Staircase To Stardom Tour, Audrey delivered a punchy show full of personality and pure musical talent that didn’t have any moment of restraint. Opening the show with “I like to touch people” by standing on stilts in a trench coat with a glasses and fake nose disguise on, she immediately brought you into this campy musical theatre kid world that felt perfectly random. At a duration of only 50 minutes, she didn’t waste a second. Alongside her tight band she powered through the songs with big singalongs accompanied by the very passionate crowd, and gave rock influenced renditions that were full of energy.
“Drive”, “Wet Hair”, “Bowling Alley” and “Thirst Trap” were early energetic highlights while “Don’t go back to his ass”, “Sex and the city” and “Phoebe” were slightly stripped back moments that still had the chaotic energy from her vocal delivery and the crowd’s interaction. “Shooting Star” is a song that was one of my most played songs of 2025, and a song I have been anxiously awaiting to see live, and I wish I could say it lived up to the expectations, but it did feel like the weakest song in her set purely from her delivery of it (even though I did scream every lyric during it).
There were no long-winded speeches in this show, and Audrey’s interactions with the audience were quite comical and chaotically tinged which matched the show’s overall energy. But it also felt so authentic to her and this record. It was a perfect capturing of a debut record by an artist who is one of the most buzzed rising stars.
She closed out the show in the most anti-pop star way possible which was sing her hit single “Sue Me” twice. Once as the closing song before the encore, and then once again after “Silver Jubilee” in the encore, but this time she asked the audience to put their phones away and everyone listened to her and not one phone was in sight during the final moments of the show as they all screamed and danced along in unison to “Sue Me”. And that honestly will be a core memory moving forward.
